7-Day Desert & Mountains: Marrakech to Merzouga — The Ultimate Private Morocco Tour

A family-run Berber adventure through the High Atlas, ancient kasbahs, deep gorges, and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. One week. Unforgettable memories. Genuine Saharan hospitality.

Why This 7-Day Morocco Tour Is Different

Most Marrakech-to-Merzouga tours rush you through Morocco in a blur of minibus stops. Not this one. Trips Nomad is a family-run tour operator born and raised at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. We don't just drive you through the desert — we live here. Every itinerary we design is guided by genuine Berber heritage, deep local knowledge, and a passion for sharing the real Morocco.

On this 7-day private desert and mountains tour, you will travel from the vibrant streets of Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains, through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, into the towering Todra Gorge, and finally into the Sahara itself — where you will ride a camel at sunset and sleep under one of the clearest night skies on earth.

No crowded buses. No rushed photo stops. Just you, your private driver-guide, and the Morocco we call home.

Experience Morocco's Desert Wonders

Day 1 — Arrival in Marrakech

Your driver meets you at Marrakech Menara Airport and takes you to your riad in the heart of the Medina. Settle in, then step out to the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square — snake charmers, storytellers, food stalls sizzling with grilled meats and fresh tagine. The Red City comes alive at sunset.

Accommodation: Traditional riad in Marrakech Medina
Meals: Welcome mint tea

Day 2 — Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

We leave Marrakech after breakfast and climb through the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). Stop for mountain panoramas and Berber village views. By midday we reach Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO World Heritage ksar where Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia were filmed. After exploring its earthen towers, we continue through Ouarzazate — the "Hollywood of Africa" — and into the breathtaking Dades Valley for our first night in the mountains.

  • Drive: ~5 hours (330 km)
  • Accommodation: Kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley
  • Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Day 3 — Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Sahara Desert)

Morning walk through the Dades Gorge's strange rock formations. Then we drive to the Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise 300 metres above a crystal-clear river — a favourite spot for hikers and photographers. From here, the landscape shifts. Lush valleys give way to desert. By late afternoon we reach Merzouga, where your camels are waiting. Trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun sets, arrive at your private desert camp, and spend the night around a campfire under the Milky Way.

  • Drive: ~4 hours (270 km)
  • Accommodation: Private Berber desert camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Day 4 — Full Day in the Sahara: 4×4 Desert Exploration

Wake before dawn to watch the sun rise over the dunes — a moment you will never forget. After breakfast at camp, we head out for a full day of desert exploration by 4×4. Visit a nomadic Berber family and share tea, tour the Gnawa music village of Khamlia, see the seasonal Sahara lake (home to flamingos in wet months), and explore abandoned mines near the Algerian border. Afternoon is free for optional sandboarding, quad biking, or simply walking the dunes.

  • Accommodation: Traditional guesthouse in Merzouga (or second camp night — your choice)
  • Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Day 5 — Merzouga → Rissani → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Fes (or return to Marrakech)

  • After a final Sahara sunrise, we visit the traditional market town of Rissani — the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty and home to one of Morocco's most authentic souks. Then we travel north through the immense Ziz Valley palm oasis, climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, and cross the cedar forests around Azrou (look for the Barbary macaques). By evening we arrive in Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco.

  • Drive: ~7 hours (460 km)
  • Accommodation: Riad in Fes Medina
  • Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Day 6 — Guided Exploration of Fes

A licensed local guide leads you through the labyrinth of Fes el-Bali, the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO site since 1981. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded in 859 AD), the colourful Chouara tanneries, the intricate Bou Inania Madrasa, and the artisan quarters where copper, leather, and ceramics are still made by hand. The afternoon is yours — climb to the Merenid Tombs for the best panoramic view of the old city.

  • Accommodation: Riad in Fes Medina
  • Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 — Departure from Fes (or Marrakech)

After breakfast, your driver takes you to Fes-Saïs Airport — or, if you prefer, we will arrange your return transfer to Marrakech or Casablanca. If your flight is later in the day, our team can suggest last-minute explorations, from the blue streets of Chefchaouen (a popular day trip extension) to a final Moroccan hammam experience.
