3-Day Merzouga Desert Tour from Marrakech
Cross the Atlas. Sleep under the Sahara stars. Wake to the sunrise over Erg Chebbi.
Tour Itinerary:
Some journeys are about getting somewhere. This one is about leaving everything else behind.
You'll cross the High Atlas before the morning fog lifts, pass through valleys that have held stories for a thousand years, and arrive at the foot of Erg Chebbi just as the light begins to soften. By the second day, you'll be on the back of a camel, moving slowly into the dunes as the sun turns the sand to gold.
This is the Sahara. Not a postcard. Not a quick stop. A real night under real stars.
Tour Highlights:
- Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m)
- Visit the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Benhaddou
- Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
- Sleep in a traditional Berber desert camp
Climb the dunes for sunrise over the Sahara - Explore the Todra Gorges canyon
Private tour — just you and your group
Day 1 — Marrakech to Dades Valley:
Pickup from your Marrakech hotel between 7 and 8am. The drive crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass — switchback roads, Berber villages tucked into the mountainside, and air that gets thinner and cleaner with every turn.
Stop at the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou kasbah, the ancient fortified village that has stood here for centuries, watching caravans come and go. Lunch in Ouarzazate, then the road winds through Skoura's palm groves and the Valley of Roses before arriving in the Dades Valley for the night.
Dinner and rest at a local guesthouse.
Day 2 — The Sahara
After breakfast, a short drive through the Todra Gorges — 300-metre canyon walls rising on either side. Then the road flattens, the palmeries of the Ziz Valley appear, and by late afternoon you're in Merzouga.
This is the moment. Your camel is waiting. The ride into the dunes takes about 45 minutes — timed so you arrive at camp just as the sun touches the horizon.
Dinner is cooked on-site. Berber music around the fire. And a sky so full of stars it feels like a roof you could reach up and touch.
Day 3 — Sunrise and Return:
The camp wakes early. A 6am climb up the nearest dune — the sand is still cool, the wind hasn't picked up yet, and the sunrise over Erg Chebbi is worth every second of lost sleep.
Breakfast at camp, then 4x4 back. The return drive follows the Draa Valley, with stops along the way, arriving back in Marrakech between 7 and 9pm.

Why travel with Trips Nomad?
We're based in Merzouga. Not Marrakech, not Casablanca — here, at the edge of the dunes. Ali and the team live in the shadow of Erg Chebbi and have been guiding travellers across this desert for years.
Every tour is private, every itinerary adjustable, and every guest is treated like family. No rush, no crowds, no factory tours.
Just the desert, the tea, and the silence.
What to Bring:
A warm clothes for the evening — the desert cools down fast after sunset.
Sunscreen and sunglasses — the Sahara sun doesn't play.
A scarf or shesh — useful for the camel ride and the wind.
A camera you know how to use. The stars do not need a filter.
Comfortable shoes for walking on sand.
A sense of wonder. You'll leave the rest behind.
